A Concise Cyclopedia of Religious Knowledge · 1890

Codex (Lat., a manuscript). There are, according to Mr. Scrivener, 1,583 Codices of the New Testament known to exist. Probably others will yet be found in out-of-the-way Eastern monasteries. But very few of these MSS. contain the whole of the New Testament. The Codices are divided into Uncials, i. e., those written in capital letters, and Cursives, those in running-hand. One of the most valuable, the Codex Sinaiticus, was found by Tischen-dorf, in the monastery on Mount Sinai, in 1859. See Bible; Textual Criticism.

A Concise Cyclopedia of Religious Knowledge: Biblical, Biographical, Geographical, Historical, Practical and Theological, Elias Benjamin Sanford, editor (New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1890). Public domain in the USA. Text from Oldpedia. From the Encyclosphere, the open network of encyclopedias run by the Knowledge Standards Foundation. Changed for Deep Dive Bible: articles our source ran together split apart; false headings joined back to their articles; duplicate articles merged; stray text from the page edges left out.
